Stoke Newington Literary Festival

If there’s one event to epitomise Stoke Newington, it’s Juke Box Fury: pure orchestrated genius presented by local legend Richard Boon.

Richard takes to the stage to host what’s become a cult event at the festival. As former manager of Buzzcocks, Richard also set up the UK’s first DIY/indie record label, New Hormones, in 1977, which led to a long and illustrious career that included Rough Trade, editing The Catalogue and of course, being far and away The World’s Coolest Librarian.

Gracing the stage with Richard will be four fabulous music writers – Martin Aston (biographer of Bjork, Pulp and 4AD Records), St Etienne’s Bob Stanley (pop historian and author of Yeah Yeah Yeah!), Lloyd Bradley (chronicler of reggae and black music in London with Sounds of London) and Mark Ellen (OGWT, Smash Hits, Q, Mojo, The Word and his own story Rock Stars Stole My Life).

Expect some musical argy-bargy, digressions aplenty and 4 great tracks as these eminent writers discuss the songs which inspired them to pick up a pen and write about music. The panel votes on whether each track is a hit or a miss – all under the baleful gaze and acerbic commentary of Mr Boon.

It’s a brilliantly flippant coming-together of great music and the people who have helped shape our opinions of it.

Also featuring the world’s second-largest glitterball, which WILL be deployed.
