The polar extremes have a fascination beyond climate change. Novelist Jean McNeil spent a year as writer-in-residence with the British Antarctic Survey. In Ice Diaries, she uses travelogue, popular science and memoir to examine our fascination with ice and how the climates of childhood frame our emotional thermodynamics for life. In North Pole, Bravo sets his sights on the the North Pole itself. Tracing polarity back to sacred ancient civilizations, he explores how the idea of a North Pole has given rise to utopias, satires, fantasies, paradoxes, science fiction and nationalist ideologies, from the cartographers of the Renaissance to the mystics of the Third Reich.
