Comedy defines Britishness like few other cultural phenomena. Comedians speak to and of their time, drawing upon and moulding Britons’ relationship with their national history, reflecting us as a people. David – AKA Mr Agreeable and long-standing writer for Melody Maker, NME, Vox, The Guardian and author of books about Krautrock & Electronica – has written the definitive (and very funny) book on the subject, Different Times: The History of British Comedy, taking in acts as diverse as Bernard Manning, Victoria Wood, Jimmy Carr and Stewart Lee. He chats to Pete Brown, author of Clubland, in an actual working men’s club – the birthplace of much of Britain’s most enduring comedy.
