Stoke Newington Literary Festival

Chris, the former head of Hackney’s Community Library Service, made an astonishing find when he started to open the boxes that he found in his parents’ loft: hundreds and hundreds of letters, diaries, artefacts and photos which vividly tell the extraordinary WW1 story of his Great Uncle Victor, who went missing on the first day of the battle of the Somme. Chris has woven his findings – which the Imperial War Museum say is one of the most comprehensive collections they’ve ever seen – into a unique, compelling, heart-wrenching story about how war affected one local family, and their long quest to find Victor.
