Guardian columnist Andy, author of the critically acclaimed Promised You a Miracle and When the Lights Went Out, tells the story of modern British politics through the triumphs and disasters of its five most radical figures. In 1968, a restless Tony Benn helped forge a radical new left, joined by colleagues who would become both collaborators and rivals: Ken Livingstone, John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn. He talks to Suzanne Moore about the project to create a more equal, liberal and democratic Britain which, he argues, has been influential in shaping everything from our city life to today’s culture wars. Whether you love or loathe them – and the event takes place right at the electoral boundary of 2 of them – there are fascinating lessons to be learned about the nature of political victory – and defeat.
