Stoke Newington Literary Festival

This 3rd – 5th of June, Stoke Newington Literary Festival returns with a stellar lineup of FREE and under-a-tenner events. Here’s 5 reasons why you should spend your summer weekend as a culture vulture in the Costa del Stokey (on the cheap)….

1) INDIE MUSIC…
We welcome back Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore for two events: Radical Publishing and MUSICS and the Free Jazz Scene, where he talks about his new art and culture press Ecstatic Peace Collective.
From Sonic Youth to Buzzcocks, we’ve got the World’s Coolest Librarian / ex-Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon with his ‘Juke Box Fury’ – playing songs and musings on music. And if you think you can tell your rare groove from your Ital-disco, have a sniff with Richard King as he discusses the resurgence of vinyl in ‘The Smell of a Great Record’.

2) PUNK LONDON…
This year marks 40 years of punk culture in London, and to celebrate we have an array of punk events. Our FREE Punk London debate discusses whether we can ever truly archive anarchy. We also take a look at the punk stories you didn’t know about: Punk Women recounts ‘zines and independent labels from Riot Grrrl to The Raincoats.

3) QUIZZES!
It’s time to show your mates who the real quiz MVP is! Head on down to the Game of Thrones themed quiz ‘Quiztime is Coming… Again’ at the Prince, or if you can tell you log from your lady check out the Twin Peaks quiz ‘The Answers Are Not What They Seem’ at Stoke Newington Library Gallery (yes, there will be booze).

4) THE BUDVAR TENT! We’ve got a marquee. In a car park. And loads of delicious beer. Oh, and free music and entertainment all day, including Kurdish saz musicians, Andy Diagram from James AND the fabulous surf noir Bikini Beach Band. Did we mention the beer?

5) CHURCH ST & THE HIGH STREET. Every year we paint the street pink (ish), so between events you can wander around independent coffee shops, sort through vintage trinkets and designer wares, sip a coffee, read a book, and if you do buy a ticket or two, know that your spare change will be helping to support literacy initiatives in Hackney.

With headline acts under a tenner too (Owen Jones, Sara Pascoe) and one of the world’s best novelists David Mitchell, our full programme mixes politics, art, comedy, music, food, fiction and feminism. Your brain will thank you.
