In the 200th anniversary year of Frankenstein‘s publication, discover the darker side of Victorian London by night in historic Abney Park and explore Hackney’s connection to the first ever science-fiction novel.
The Age of Reform was an era of massive social, political, scientific and industrial transformation. Anxiety accompanied all this upheaval and the accompanying growth of the modern city. Using Abney as a canvas, we’ll map some links between Mary Shelley’s seminal text and a dramatically changing 19th Century London. What was happening to animate the Gothic genre with all its Georgian and Victorian angst – and what’s the big Hackney link?
